Description:
Reviews and road test drive of the new BMW x6. We thought we had heard and seen it all in the motor industry, until the X6. BMW have managed to cross breed a sports utility vehicle (SUV) with a coupe. This is the third 4x4 in the X range from the German manufacturer. Believe or not, but its true, the X5 3.0 diesel in BMWs third best selling model, so no wonder they have added to the range. The company claim that the 4.4 litre V8 in this vehicle is the worlds first engine where the twin turbochargers and catalytic converters are housed in the valley between the two rows of cylinders. They are able to do this by using direct injection, which gives more space, unlike traditional v8 engines which would have a carburettor sittng there. The BMW x6 offers a great driving position. The rear seats could be a bit of let down, with passengers feeling a littled cramped in, considering if they believe they actually think they are getting into a conventional 4x4. If your over six foot tall, make sure you get the front passenger position! This is becuase of the coupe style rear. This also leads to a serious lack of visibilty for the driver. Good job it comes with a rear parkig camera, otherwise you would have no chance. True to BMW though, it is a very refined ride, with no intrusion by outside noise. There is also plenty of kit available too. Standard spec includes 19" alloy wheels, the Dynamic Performance Control system, xDrive four-wheel-drive, Dynamic Stability Control, sports suspension and front and rear parking warning systems. You also get adaptive dampers, active steering, cornering lights, active cruise control and a six-speed automatic gearbox. All models come with full leather trim. There are also plenty of options to add on to, Sat nav with a traffic message channel that updates you on congestion, digital TV, high-beam assist, a head-up display, DAB radio and USB interface are all on the add-on list. Top of the range X6 xDrive 50i V8 twin-turbo is a brute with attitude, and sounds like one too. Put your foot down you are propelled forward like a rocket ship. From a standing start, 60mph in achieved in a mere 5.4 seconds. If you like, you can continue your charge until you get to an electronically limited 155mph.
